Quite some time ago I noticed that my beloved Philadelphia Garlic Dip, that I used to purchase and munch down with bags of salty crinkle cut potato chips, suddenly disappeared from the grocery store shelf. I tried other stores and still nothing.
“Could it be?”, I thought, “That they’ve stopped making it? Nahh, it seemed pretty popular.” But it was true. I googled the terms “Philadelphia Garlic Dip” and found some desperate woman attempting to petition Kraft to bring the stuff back. How horrible I thought. So one day, while cruising the supermarket shelves I saw plain ol’ spreadable cream cheese in the same kind of container my beloved dip used to come in. “I’m gonna make my own”, I resolved. So here it is…after a few attempts…my contribution to garlic dip lovers everywhere.
It’s oh so simple too, just combine the four ingredients and mix. Then rip your belt off like Homer Simpson and park yourself on the couch with a bag of chips on one side and the dip on your lap and enjoy!
Copycat Garlic Cream Cheese Dip
A copycat version of Kraft's Philadelphia Garlic Dip. Made with just 4 ingredients–oh so simple and as far as we can tell, IDENTICAL to the store stuff that was discontinued.
- 8 oz Spreadable Cream Cheese ((250 ml) The dip-type Container is handy for dip too!)
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder ((If using Garlic Salt instead, reduce salt amount below))
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 3 tbsp Hot Water (Hot water helps during mixing)
-
Spoon cream cheese from its container into small bowl.
-
Add garlic powder, salt and hot water
-
Mix thoroughly till cream cheese has smooth consistency. Don't worry that it looks somewhat thin–after sitting in the fridge, the consistency hardens up somewhat and so we have to make it thinner initially to give it just the right consistency when taken out of the fridge.
-
Spoon the mixture back into the cream cheese container, cover and refrigerate until use.
